WHO Issues Concern Over Acute Scarcity of Weight-Loss Injections

Fewer than a tenth of individuals eligible to benefit from obesity jabs like Wegovy are able to get them, caution the WHO as it releases its initial recommendations on the drugs.

Given in excess of 1,000,000,000 individuals worldwide now classified as obese, it is urging broader and more equitable availability to this class of drugs.

Per forecasts, in excess of 2,000,000,000 will be living with obesity by 2030 without intervention.

"The new guidelines affirms that excess weight is a chronic disease that can be addressed with comprehensive and continuous care," stated the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, insufficient output, and distribution challenges are major barriers to universal access to the treatments that can aid individuals in losing substantial weight, notes the organization.

Skinny Jab Supply Crisis

Even under the present most favorable case, the supply of these medications would only suffice for about 100 million people – less than 10% of those who need them, per the health organization.

The advice encourages countries and companies to expand access, through approaches like voluntary licensing.

Exclusive production rights on semaglutide – the core ingredient of a leading brand – is due to expire in several countries in 2026.

The Way Weight-Loss Jabs Function

The injections replicate a body's own hormone to slow digestion, reduce hunger and enhance the sense of being full so users reduce food intake.

Individuals typically begin shedding pounds within a few weeks of beginning the once-weekly jabs.

Evidence points to patients may put most of the weight back on after a year of discontinuing the medication, when their usual hunger resume.

To be overweight or obese increases your chance for developing diseases, like diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and some cancers.

Excess weight affects individuals in every country and was associated with 3.7 million fatalities worldwide in 2024, as per the health agency.
