The Video Platform Provides Viewers Control to Reduce AI-Generated Videos in Their Feeds

TikTok is introducing a updated setting that allows them to cut down on the amount of artificial intelligence-produced videos appearing in their timelines. This initiative comes as the service announced that it now features more than 1 thousand million content made with AI.

Trial and Implementation

The update is in a pilot phase over the coming weeks before a widespread launch. This shift coincides with a rise in AI content, driven by recent AI video creators.

AI Proliferation Online

Studies have shown that almost one in 10 of the most rapidly expanding channels on another major platform primarily display clips produced artificially. A significant portion of this content is classified as mass-produced AI material, a term for substandard, factory-style content that is often nonsensical or bizarre.

Based on user feedback that numerous viewers appreciate content made with AI tools, ranging from digital art to educational videos, and we want to give people the power to adjust the amount of that, according to their own preferences,” commented a spokesperson.

AI on the Platform

The platform shared that there are now 1.3bn videos on its service labeled as AI-generated. Overall, over 100 m pieces of content are uploaded to the service daily, making AI content a limited part of its overall inventory.

Customizing Your Feed

Users will be capable of limit or boost the amount of artificial media they watch by accessing the “manage topic” option in the application and choosing AI-made media. Additional categories that can already be modified under the filter cover news, clothing, cosmetics, and movement.

Content Labeling and Policies

Its rules require creators to tag convincing artificially created content, and it bans harmful deepfakes of public figures or critical incidents. Any authentic-looking AI-generated clip that is without a tag can be removed under its community policies.

Additionally, the app will now apply an “AI-made” label to content made using its own AI tools, or detected by an cross-platform project for spotting AI-generated material. This measure is intended to deter users from trying to evade the tagging system.

Responsible AI Funding

TikTok is furthermore introducing a $2 million educational fund for specialists and groups to produce learning resources about using AI responsibly. This project will support charitable organizations specializing in teaching programming and robotics.

Platform Protection

The video-sharing app has defended its moderation strategy, amid discussion over intentions to make redundant hundreds of review team members in the United Kingdom. The company is planning to eliminate a significant number of roles in its user protection department in the UK capital, with labor groups and internet security professionals expressing worry that people are being substituted by automated systems.

A senior executive clarified that people-led review would continue to be important, but automated tools can shield workers by eliminating the most graphic content before it is viewed by staff. TikTok reported a 76% decrease in disturbing and violent content handled by safety staff over the past year due to reliance on its machine learning processes.

“We think that it’s essential to balance humans and technology to maintain a secure environment,” the official commented. “We’ll have humans as integral to the approach, but we also think it’s extremely critical to limit contact with unsafe media as swiftly, which is the area in which a extensive automated help is really helping us process content quickly.”
